How to Use

This guide provides a structured method for applying the Pulse Check to a real-world product. Twitter (X) is used as a case study to demonstrate how a system can be evaluated, scored, and redesigned from a toxic interaction profile to a humane one.

01

The Severity Formula

Evaluate the interaction against these three pillars. Sum the points for the Total Severity Score.

PillarScoring RulePoints
Incentive AlignmentDoes the system reward behaviors that may increase cognitive, emotional, or behavioral load over time?Yes = 1
High-Arousal TriggerDoes the interaction involve high-arousal mechanisms (e.g., craving, stress, or alertness spikes)?Yes = 1
Duration of Exposure(0) Transient: Effects end immediately
(+1) Lingering: Stress or arousal lasts 20–60 minutes
(+2) Chronic: Sustained engagement patterns create cumulative load

The Severity Scale

Neutral

User is in full control; no measurable cognitive or emotional load.

0

A

Low Load

Minor friction or annoyance; effects end quickly.

1

B

Elevated Load

Noticeable stress or arousal; effects persist for a short period.

2

C

Extractive Dynamics

Interaction encourages repeated engagement or stress responses; risk of cumulative load.

3

D

High-Risk Loop

Persistent engagement patterns create sustained cognitive, emotional, or behavioral strain.

Example Evaluation

01

The Altruheuristics Evaluation

PillarRationalePoints
Incentive AlignmentIllusive. The feed prioritizes high-arousal content such as outrage, conflict, and breaking news because these signals increase engagement velocity and session length. The system is optimized for continuous reaction rather than resolution or completion.Yes = 1
High-Arousal TriggerReactive. Polarizing and threat-framed content elevates arousal through stress and vigilance cues. Rapid shifts between alarming topics keep attention in a heightened state, encouraging frequent checking and reactive behavior.Yes = 1
Duration of ExposureChronic. The real-time, never-ending structure creates a persistent monitoring loop. Framing information as continuously unfolding increases the likelihood of extended cognitive and emotional load beyond the session.

To evaluate the X News Feed, we examine how it leverages outrage mechanics and high-velocity information. Whereas LinkedIn primarily engages users through professional status dynamics, Twitter relies on tribal conflict and survival-aligned alerts to shape attention, emotion, and engagement patterns.

The Rationale

Explaining the Adrenaline / Cortisol Trigger

Twitter’s news feed is structured around rapid exposure to high-salience events, including polarizing headlines, conflict-driven posts, and real-time breaking news. Rather than being processed as neutral information, these signals are often interpreted through a social threat or urgency lens.

Physiological Response (Probabilistic): Repeated exposure to social conflict and threat-framed content increases the likelihood of activating stress and vigilance systems associated with the sympathetic nervous response. This elevates arousal and readiness rather than reflective processing.

Trigger Mechanism: High-velocity updates and visible conflict cues encourage reactive engagement. Users may experience heightened alertness or physical tension during use, reinforcing fast scrolling, checking, and response behaviors.

Explaining Chronic Exposure

Twitter’s feed emphasizes real-time, continuously updating information, increasing the likelihood of structural exposure compared to more episodic or goal-oriented platforms.

Structural Loop: Features such as pull-to-refresh, breaking news indicators, and real-time notifications reduce natural stopping points. This design increases the probability that users feel the need to remain attentive or frequently return to the feed.

Extended Cognitive Load: Because much of the content is framed around conflict, urgency, or uncertainty, attention may remain partially engaged after the session ends. This can manifest as repeated checking behavior or sustained alertness, often described as doomscrolling.

Reducing Chronic Exposure in the X News Feed

The audit reveals that the current feed architecture relies on Time Extraction rather than value. This creates high Biological Debt where the user feels depleted after use. To make the Twitter news feed more humane, the goal is to reduce sustained high-arousal loops and introduce clearer structure, predictability, and stopping points.
