Disrupted Attention

Retrieving a user’s personal information before trust is established. This pattern consists of four key sub-sections:

  • Double Friction: Force submission of information before access.
  • Surprise Surprise: Limit access to personal information.
  • Copy of Shame: Guilt-tripping the user for providing personal information or engagement.
  • Houdini Content: Restrict content until the user provides access or engages.
Apps restrict content until an account is created, then further limit access until the user engages. Free content is often hidden behind an email or paywall.
