The Toolkit
How to Use
This guide provides a structured method for applying the Pulse Check to a real-world product. Twitter (X) is used as a case study to demonstrate how a system can be evaluated, scored, and redesigned from a toxic interaction profile to a humane one.

01
The Severity Formula
Evaluate the interaction against these three pillars. Sum the points for the Total Severity Score.
| Pillar | Scoring Rule | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Incentive Alignment | Does the system reward behaviors that may increase cognitive, emotional, or behavioral load over time? | Yes = 1 |
| High-Arousal Trigger | Does the interaction involve high-arousal mechanisms (e.g., craving, stress, or alertness spikes)? | Yes = 1 |
| Duration of Exposure | (0) Transient: Effects end immediately (+1) Lingering: Stress or arousal lasts 20–60 minutes (+2) Chronic: Sustained engagement patterns create cumulative load | 0 +1 +2 |
| Total Score | Sum of the above (Capped at 4) | ___ / 4 |
The Severity Scale
Neutral
User is in full control; no measurable cognitive or emotional load.
0
A
Low Load
Minor friction or annoyance; effects end quickly.
1
B
Elevated Load
Noticeable stress or arousal; effects persist for a short period.
2
C
Extractive Dynamics
Interaction encourages repeated engagement or stress responses; risk of cumulative load.
3
D
High-Risk Loop
Persistent engagement patterns create sustained cognitive, emotional, or behavioral strain.

X News Feed
Example Evaluation
01
The Altruheuristics Evaluation
| Pillar | Rationale | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Incentive Alignment | Illusive. The feed prioritizes high-arousal content such as outrage, conflict, and breaking news because these signals increase engagement velocity and session length. The system is optimized for continuous reaction rather than resolution or completion. | Yes = 1 |
| High-Arousal Trigger | Reactive. Polarizing and threat-framed content elevates arousal through stress and vigilance cues. Rapid shifts between alarming topics keep attention in a heightened state, encouraging frequent checking and reactive behavior. | Yes = 1 |
| Duration of Exposure | Chronic. The real-time, never-ending structure creates a persistent monitoring loop. Framing information as continuously unfolding increases the likelihood of extended cognitive and emotional load beyond the session. | 0 +1 +2 |
| Class | High-Risk Feedback Loop | Severity 4 |
To evaluate the X News Feed, we examine how it leverages outrage mechanics and high-velocity information. Whereas LinkedIn primarily engages users through professional status dynamics, Twitter relies on tribal conflict and survival-aligned alerts to shape attention, emotion, and engagement patterns.
The Rationale
Explaining the Adrenaline / Cortisol Trigger
Twitter’s news feed is structured around rapid exposure to high-salience events, including polarizing headlines, conflict-driven posts, and real-time breaking news. Rather than being processed as neutral information, these signals are often interpreted through a social threat or urgency lens.
Physiological Response (Probabilistic): Repeated exposure to social conflict and threat-framed content increases the likelihood of activating stress and vigilance systems associated with the sympathetic nervous response. This elevates arousal and readiness rather than reflective processing.
Trigger Mechanism: High-velocity updates and visible conflict cues encourage reactive engagement. Users may experience heightened alertness or physical tension during use, reinforcing fast scrolling, checking, and response behaviors.
Explaining Chronic Exposure
Twitter’s feed emphasizes real-time, continuously updating information, increasing the likelihood of structural exposure compared to more episodic or goal-oriented platforms.
Structural Loop: Features such as pull-to-refresh, breaking news indicators, and real-time notifications reduce natural stopping points. This design increases the probability that users feel the need to remain attentive or frequently return to the feed.
Extended Cognitive Load: Because much of the content is framed around conflict, urgency, or uncertainty, attention may remain partially engaged after the session ends. This can manifest as repeated checking behavior or sustained alertness, often described as doomscrolling.
Reducing Chronic Exposure in the X News Feed
The audit reveals that the current feed architecture relies on Time Extraction rather than value. This creates high Biological Debt where the user feels depleted after use. To make the Twitter news feed more humane, the goal is to reduce sustained high-arousal loops and introduce clearer structure, predictability, and stopping points.
Transparency
Incentive Alignment
Introduce a “Why am I seeing this?” label that clarifies whether a post is surfaced due to factors such as high engagement velocity, negative sentiment, or informational relevance. This helps users contextualize content without obscuring system incentives.
Arousal Regulation
Trigger
Disable real-time “Live” views by default. Shifting toward batched consumption, such as daily or periodic digests, reduces continuous urgency signals and supports more deliberate engagement.
Session Closure
Duration of Exposure
Add a “News Summary” feature that presents stories with a clear beginning, progression, and conclusion. Defined endpoints reduce open-ended monitoring and allow attention to disengage cleanly after use.
02
The New Altruheuristics
Re-evaluating the interaction pattern against the changes made.
| Pillar | Rationale | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Incentive Alignment | Increased transparency explains why content is shown, restoring user context and agency. | 0 |
| High-Arousal Trigger | Content is batched, reducing continuous urgency signals, though news topics may still be inherently high-arousal. | 1 |
| Duration of Exposure | Clear closure markers enable users to disengage fully after a session. | 0 |
| New Score | Sum of points | 1 |
| Class | Friction | Severity 1 |
Severity Scores (0-4)
Each interaction or heuristic is scored using the Altruheuristics framework (Incentive Alignment, High-Arousal Trigger, Duration of Exposure).
Total Heuristics Evaluated
The number of interactions assessed in the project.
BIS
the average level of cognitive, emotional, and attention-related load imposed by the system. Lower scores indicate more humane and stabilizing designs; higher scores indicate sustained high-arousal or extractive interactions.
03
The Altruheuristics Health Grade Scorecard
| Score Range | Grade | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 0.0 – 0.5 | A | Humane & Stabilizing: Product supports user balance and control. |
| 0.6 – 1.5 | B | Ethically Conscious: Minor friction; no sustained high-arousal loops. |
| 1.6 – 2.5 | C | Neutral / Indifferent: Contains standard industry engagement patterns (e.g., FOMO, urgency). |
| 2.6 – 3.5 | D | Extractive: Interaction patterns create sustained cognitive or emotional load; potential for habit formation. |
| 3.6 – 4.0 | E | High-Risk Feedback Loop: Persistent engagement patterns generate cumulative cognitive, emotional, or behavioral load. |
